Context/Preface: Becoming a competent communicator is really a lifelong journey and every interaction has its
unique demands. Therefore, there is no 'ideal' way to communicate, it is situational, it is relational, and it is
learned. Our authors on pages 21-24 discuss seven 'common denominators' or 'characteristics' that
characterize effective communication in most contexts. On page 22 there is a 'self-assessment' entitled "Your
Communication Strengths and Goals" that might be insightful for you to complete and score (Note: this selfassessment is electronically available as one of the items on the Student Resources webpage). It is for your
personal insight--no results need to be reported!
Written Focus: In your reflective essay, address each of the seven (7) Characteristics of Competent
Communicators and describe how you rate or assess your own communication competence in each area.
How long should it be? Getting the job done thoughtfully is likely a well-developed paragraph for each
characteristic.
