I visited a NY State Legislature. Her Name is Monica Martinez. We couldn't meet with her because she was not available. My group met with her assistant. The issue presented was about Immigrants high rate in utilizing the emergency room. The majority use the emergency room as a substitute for a Primary MD office. And many lack resources and hearth insurance. The healthcare system emergency room is overwhelming crowded. Our question to Monica Martinez is, what's on the agenda to improve the situation of immigrants excessive utilization of the emergency room? Reflection paper: requirements include: A. The issue presented and discuss (immigrants excessive utilization of the emergency room) B. My understanding of the issue? The majority don't have accessibility to health care ( lack resources, uninsured, high acuity of illnesses ,chronic diseases untreated). C. My point of view ( although they're immigrants with socioeconomic disparities they still deserve health care access and treatment). D. What were you looking to accomplish in regards to the issue? (I was hoping to get real answers. I feel like all of our concerns were escalated to the Federal Government level "passing the buck" E. Your opinion as to the knowledge of the Legislature?( I definitely believe that she's aware of the issues surrounding immigrants excessive utilization of the emergency room. But procedures and protocols need to be adhered to. Immigrants need to apply for Healthcare insurance) F. What went well with the visit?( The representative was receptive to our questions, we were encouraged to express our concerns. As a nurse I witness immigrants excessive utilization of the emergency room, many are admitted with very acute and chronic illnesses). They lack resources but they receive a high standard of care. Lab work. Radiological testing multiple screenings, etc) G. What could have been better?( If Monica Martinez was available to meet with us herself instead of her representative, and lastly if our concerns accomplished anything, I feel like the entire government agencies are all overwhelmed)
