Reflective Journal

  In addition to the categories that NCES provides for all schools in the U.S., there are additional resources in your state for other categories. You may wish to explore this information for your personal interests Assignment 1: Part 1: Weekly Report of Field Work (7 entries x 1 point = 7 points) Students will maintain a reflective journal chronicling their experiences. Start the journal with a description of the setting (physical layout of school and classroom, type of community- e.g., rural, suburban, urban), number of adults and children in the class, number of children with and without disabilities (and types of disabilities),etc. There must be, at a minimum, weekly entries describing what was observed or done, what was effective, ideas for improving or expanding the instruction, assessment, management, and/or accommodations for students with special needs, etc. Maintain confidentiality of child and family information. Identify areas in which you need to improve your skills or increase your knowledge. Journal entries will be submitted weekly. Refer to the Rubric below before submitting journal entries Part 2: Response to Focus Questions (7 entries x 1 points per entry = 7 points). Respond to the focus questions provided in the Calendar of Weekly Requirements (Section VI of this syllabus). Rubric: Part 1: Summary and Reflection of Field Work (Due Weeks 1-8) 2 points: There is a well written, comprehensive, and detailed summary of the week’s activities and shows self-analysis of what was observed and/or done. The entry refers to one or more professional standards related to the week’s activities, with an explanation of how each standard is relevant. 1 point: There is a partial response that describes the week’s activities and shows some reflection. There are grammar and/or spelling errors. Standards are referenced but no rationale is provided. 0 points: The response is grammatically incorrect and/or contains spelling errors and only vaguely describes the week’s activities. There is no reflection. There is no reference to standards. Part 2: Responses to Focus Questions (Weeks 1-7) 1 point: There is a well written response to the week’s focus questions, based on both information learned in courses and hands-on experiences. The entry refers to one or more professional standards related to the week’s questions, with an explanation of how each standard is relevant. 0.5 point for each entry that is: There is a partial response to the questions, based on course content or hands-on experience. There are grammar and/or spelling errors. Standards are referenced but no rationale is provided. 0 points: The response is grammatically incorrect and/or contains spelling errors. The answers are vague, incomplete, or not relevant. No standards are cited.
