Research Methods

Dr. Grey is interested in different types of study habits and how they help students with their exams. She samples students from her university randomly separates them into each type of study system. The systems she use are: No studying, studying using a speed reading method and not taking format, eating fish while studying to improve cognitive function, and studying in the library. She recruits 200 students and separates them into men and women, then randomly selects 25 people from each gender and puts them into each condition. During finals week she provides them with a general intelligence test and examines the scores. 1) What is the independent variable and dependent variable?   2) How many levels are there for the independent variable and what are they?   3) What type of independent variable are each level (Environmental, Instructional, Invasive)?     4) Describe the type of assignment used in this study.   5) Are there any possible confounds or threats to validity in this experiment (assuming the levels of the IV work)   6) How could this test be made into a within subjects design? What problems may arise from this design? Dr. Grey decides that the student’s expectations of the exam may interact with how effective their study habits are. She ran the experiment again but told half the students the tests will be easy, and the other half that the test will be difficult. She then split thee students into the different study conditions. 7) How would you describe this factorial?     8) How many conditions are there and what are they (you can draw the box diagram I used on the slides)?           9) Dr. Grey obtains her results (presented in the following graph). Without in depth analysis what could you estimate about the significance of the main effects or interactions?
