Responding to an emergency call

SCENARIO 1
You are responding to an emergency call. You arrive at a busy downtown intersection where you need to make a left turn to in order to reach the scene of the call in the least amount of time. However, you see that a group of young children are crossing the intersection. What do you do?
• Make the left turn, potentially putting the children in danger.
• Proceed straight, removing the children from harm’s way, but delaying your arrival on scene, which potentially jeopardizes the health and safety of those at the scene.

SCENARIO 2:
You are a front-line uniform officer on patrol when you observe a vehicle go through a red light causing pedestrians to jump back onto the sidewalk to avoid being struck by this vehicle. You activate your emergency roof lights and pull the vehicle over.
You speak to the female driver who is upset and advises you that she didn’t realize she had gone through the red light. She further advises you that she had just been called by the school and has learned that her eight-year-old son had fallen off a swing and might have a broken arm and that she was hurrying to get to the school.

SCENARIO 3:
Nineteen-year-old Veejay is an avid hockey fan. He hears from a buddy that the sporting goods store in his neighborhood has a new line of hockey caps, so he decides to drop by just to browse. At the store, Vijay tries on several caps. Even at $30 each, he knows he can’t afford one because he doesn’t have a job, so when he thought no one was looking; he leaves one hat on and pulls up the hood of his sweater to hide the hat. As he steps outside the store, he is stopped by the store security and taken back to the store’s security office. The police are called.
You are the responding officer. The store security advises you that the store has no specific policy for laying charges and leaves the decision to you. Meanwhile, Veejay is very remorseful and tells you that he has never been in trouble with the law. You confirm this to be true.
