Revenge As the author of one textbook explains, "Theme is the central idea in the work—whether fiction, poetry, or drama. It is the comment the work makes on the human condition" (Griffith 49). How does the subject of revenge evolve into an important theme in literary works such as William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, John Milton's Paradise Lost, Books 1 and 2, and Jonathan Swift'sGulliver's Travels, Parts 1 and/or 2?What causes various characters to seek vengeance, and do common motivations exist? What situations may result from a person or a group's pursuing revenge? How moral or immoral is the process of seeking revenge? Write a multi-paragraph essay of literary analysis to determine the theme or themes surrounding revenge in the aforementioned literary works. Include an introduction that defines the subject of revenge and its thematic importance. Identify the authors, complete titles of the works and their genres. Then compose an argumentative thesis statement that identifies and evaluates the theme(s) of revenge as a compass to discover humanity. Construct analytical body paragraphs for the various works and include specific evidence for ideas or assertions in the form of direct quotations and ensuing explanation. Include correct parenthetical MLA documentation and a properly formatted Works Cited page.
