The movie debuted at the ASHA convention recently (followed by roaring applause from the audience of speech pathologists). As Dr. Peter Belafsky (an ENT at UC Davis) says in the movie, swallowing difficulty is “underrated in the medical community”. This movie was created to increase awareness and bring much needed attention to the millions of people living with this condition.
The movie was created by the NFOSD (National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders):
The National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders was founded in August 2006 as a national, independent, 501©(3) not for profit organization. Inspired by the limitations of available treatments and the struggles, challenges and sheer bravery of patients suffering from Dysphagia, founding member and leading Otolayrangologist Dr. Peter Belafsky, speech pathologist and Dysphagia consultant Jan Pryor and Dysphagia patient Sonia Blue began creating their vision of a Foundation that would grow to be a leading resource for Dysphagia education, patient/caregiver support and serve as a clearinghouse for cutting edge research and development. Soon joined by Valerie Bakst our secretary and Mike Donovan our treasurer/fundraiser, our board was complete.
It is a good resource for current news and full of dysphagia resources such as videos, articles, and stories. This is their website: http://swallowingdisorderfoundation.com/
