In determining what makes good leaders, she proposes three pieces of suggestions/advice.
One: Asking how we spend our time, who with, where we go, what we do (Torres, 2014). These things are important. We have to consider the purpose behind our actions, our travel, and such. If it’s moving us towards our goals, we can be effective leaders over time, because it teaches us how we can teach others. For example, as social workers, we can be more caring, enthusiastic, supportive towards other people if we stay close to kind people and away from toxic people. Furthermore, travel can be a great way of helping us consider the world around us. Going to a foreign country, for example, can offer a great way to expand our horizons – we learn about different cultures, and get out of our bubbles. Which moves onto our next point, her second the bit of advice!:
Two: Suggesting we branch out with people who are different from you, but are willing to cooperate (Torres, 2014): We should not make friends arbitrarily, but rather meet people who we connect with that are going to help us move towards our goals. We can learn a lot from people who are different from us. I agree with the implications here; we should not just limit ourselves to one type of friend, because divergent thinkers will often offer you different sorts of solutions you may not have come up with if you stick to your circle. I am trying to make friends and/or support people of different cultures. I went to Japan last summer and toured with two others. I learned about customs and ways of life. I am going to be going to China this summer, and hopefully if the practicum pans out, I’ll be doing prayer therapy with children at a school, or at the very least exploring China for two weeks with a guide, for similar reasons I am going to Japan.
