"The team project entails writing an analytical report on the ways in which a specific country (or an industry - exceptionally a company or an institution - within that specific country) fits into the global business environment. How does the country’s (or the industry – exceptionally the company or institution - within that specific country) presence shape the global context and vice-versa. In other words, what are the interrelations between your unit of analysis and the rest of the global business environment? Do these interrelations shape its development/growth, policies and/or its power/weakness at the global level? These are guidelines, however depending on your choice of country, the structure and focus of your report may differ from what is described here. As a word of caution, please be advised that doing a project of this nature on a company or an institution can be challenging, but is still nevertheless do-able. However, you are still advised to make your choice very diligently and carefully.
Students are encouraged to select a theme around which to build their project. Some interesting themes that students have worked on in the past, include for example, “Rice and Vietnam”, “South Africa and the World Cup”, “The Jade Industry and Myanmar”, “The English Premier League and the Global Business Environment”, “The Mafia and Italy”, and “Medical Tourism and Thailand”.
After choosing a country and theme, you must then define a research question, which your report will answer.
Having a theme and a research question prevents students from writing a descriptive report on just the economic, social, cultural, political, legal and technological and/or ideological dimensions aspects of the chosen country. Such information is freely available on the internet and do not add value to your report. However, when these elements are integrated into the report around a specific theme and research question, then the analysis becomes more critical and interesting.
