Sacagawea (also sometimes called Sakakawea or Sacajawea) was born in 1788, near the present-day town of Salmon, Idaho. She was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who acted as an interpreter and guide for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean in 1804–1806.
She was born into the Agaidika ("Salmon Eater") band of Lemhi Shoshone tribe which lived along the Snake River and her father was Chief Canoe Paddle or Cameahwait. It is believed that she had two older brothers, Cameahwait and Scannon, as well as a younger sister named Lisette.
