When it comes to sampling and how it can affect the validity of a study, According to Daniel (2009),
“determining an adequate sample size in any research project is essential because it influences the
quality of
the research outcome.” This relatively simple statement packs quite a punch when it comes to
determining how important sampling is. Within any project, a sample is how a study becomes effective. By making sure the
correct sample is chosen, the desired effect of the study will be able to become greater than if the wrong
sample was selected.
While there are many factors that determine the size of the ideal sample, I will refer to out topic about the
power calculations. Within the power calculation, there were impact calculations that went into how the
sample size is selected. Depending on how vast you want the impact and how many subjects you may have access too all together. The sampling size is critical to determining the power of the study and the impact. Without the correct calculations, any study is doomed from the start and will not make the impact that we all hope our studies will make. I believe that sampling, while it seems simple from the start, is one of the most crucial parts of any study. It is calculated by the desired impact and depending on the overall population of the study group itself. For me, my sample size is determined by how many students are planning to transfer to a four-year
institution once completing community college.
