For this assignment, you will need to gain access to a school’s public relations program or plan if one exists in your school and/or school district. If your school and/or district does not have a program or plan, you will need to locate one online.
Step One: Analyze the document to determine if it is a full public relations program or a sub-component of a larger system (i.e. a complete PR Plan or a stand-alone marketing program). Identify the separate plan components and determine the following:
• What is the purpose of the plan?
• What is the event or circumstances the plan is intended to address?
• What is the targeted audience(s)?
• Who are the participants of the plan?
• Does the plan meet the school’s needs, and is it up-to-date?
Step Two: Draft a community relations plan outline. Identify whether it is a Coordinated Plan, Centralized Plan, or a Decentralized Plan. The plan should include the following components in the outline:
- Introduction/Executive Summary
- Purpose
- Audience/Stakeholders
- Various Components (based on a complete plan)
- Internal Communication
- External Communication
- Working with Media
- Marketing
- Capital Financing/Bonds
- Crisis Action
- Parental Involvement
- Timeline/Schedule
- Evaluation
You should fill in the plan outline with as many materials possible. This should not be a complete plan, as that would require significant time and resources. Review the text for additional information and a sample plan outline.
Step Three: Conclude with a summary of what you have learned from the plan analysis and how you incorporated those attributes into your plan outline.
