POST by Alexus Porter:
My current title of employment is in Accounts Payable in a corporate office for elder and rehabilitation care. This job requires a great deal of focus as well as security. There is potential for potential security issues in the workplace. On a daily basis I have access and handle confidential information from clients, employees, and vendors. When dealing with different types of confidential information there is potential for many different security issues.
Some potential security issues are leaking confidential information, HIPPA violations, and fraud. At my place of employment we deal with numerous individuals’ names, address, date of birth, social security numbers and sometimes financials. Having access to so many types of personal information can put our clients, employees, and vendors at risk.
Now with any place of employment that handles these types of personal information there will be a waiver or contract signed explaining confidentiality rules and the consequences if they are broken. But sometimes there can still be security issues and sometimes an employer can do more with security.
If security becomes an issue there are many different protocols in place to resolve the issue. When something is noticed as a potential security issue Human Resources and the IT team gets involved. There is an investigation into any and everything. Questions are asked like who, what, when, and how to understand if there is an actual issue. My company also sends out a companywide message informing people there was a breach and it has been resolved.
Security issues sometimes can be unpreventable especially in today’s world of technology. One recommendation I have to improve security is limiting access. I think that only certain individuals should have access to the confidential information. Not everyone should have access and definitely should not have access to all information at once unless they have special access. We deal with so much personal information that we should be more careful with how we handle that information.
