The author Sally McMillen takes us to the long fight for women’s rights, particularly the landmark event of the
Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. Four women are highlighted in the book for their significant devotion to
further the rights of women; Lucretia Coffin Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony
The assignment is to select ONE of these women and become their voice. Using one of these voices you will
write a letter to friend describing your participation in the Women’s Rights Movement and why you are so
passionate about it. In other words, you will take on the role of either Mott, Stanton, Stone or Anthony and
show us her view as illustrated in the book, Seneca Fall and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement. You
will not use other sources for this letter, only the Seneca Falls book.
Some items to include in your letter:
How did your childhood influence your views on women’s place in society?
How did your family experiences influence your views on women’s rights?
How did your mother or father, or both, influence your views on women’s rights?
What was your education or schooling and how did it shape your views?
Did you marry and have children?
Did you seek a profession or try to? How has your work affected your views?
What obstacles did you overcome to be part of the movement?
Did some friends or family or colleagues criticize you for your progressive views?
What role did you have at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848?
Were you satisfied with the outcome of the convention?
Did you continue your work for women’s rights throughout your life? How?
Do you believe women will one day be granted the right to vote?
Above are some guidelines to frame your letter. Remember this is a letter you are writing to a friend as these
women might have done.
