Have you ever heard of the term sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing? You probably regularly engage in" rel="nofollow">in sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing to understand ambiguous situations, whether you know it or not. Sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing is part of cognitive adeptness and a function of the perceptual process. It is the process by which people receive stimuli (in" rel="nofollow">information), organize it, and in" rel="nofollow">interpret it. Interpretation in" rel="nofollow">includes givin" rel="nofollow">ing meanin" rel="nofollow">ing to and makin" rel="nofollow">ing sense of in" rel="nofollow">information. It is important to note that there is not just one way in" rel="nofollow">in which to receive, organize, and in" rel="nofollow">interpret complex in" rel="nofollow">information. Leaders might engage in" rel="nofollow">in various types of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing dependin" rel="nofollow">ing on the situation.
To prepare for this assignment:
• Review the article "Organizin" rel="nofollow">ing and the Process of Sense Makin" rel="nofollow">ing." Consider how sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing enables leaders to give meanin" rel="nofollow">ing to ambiguities within" rel="nofollow">in organizations.
• Review the article "The Social Processes of Organizational Sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing." Pay particular attention to various types of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing and situations for which each is appropriate.
• Review the course media "Leadership Competency: Cognitive Adeptness," with Dr. Thomas and Russ Bredholt. Thin" rel="nofollow">ink about cognitive skills leaders might use in" rel="nofollow">in the sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing process.
• Identify an organization for which you work or have worked. Select one type of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing you might use to help you assign meanin" rel="nofollow">ing to ambiguous situations.
• Consider cognitive skills that might be useful in" rel="nofollow">in the type of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing you selected.
The assignment: (1-2 pages)
• Briefly describe an organization for which you work or have worked.
• Describe the type of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing you might use as a leader in" rel="nofollow">in the organization and explain" rel="nofollow">in why.
• Describe two cognitive skills that might be particularly useful in" rel="nofollow">in the type of sensemakin" rel="nofollow">ing you described and explain" rel="nofollow">in why.
I’ve worked at a Juvenile Justice Facility……. I took a leadership position at a juvenile center where I worked as a Program Coordin" rel="nofollow">inator. As a Program Coordin" rel="nofollow">inator, I was mandated with the followin" rel="nofollow">ing functions; ensurin" rel="nofollow">ing the implementation of different policies, trackin" rel="nofollow">ing down and recordin" rel="nofollow">ing the overall department expenditure, recruitin" rel="nofollow">ing new staff at the department dependin" rel="nofollow">ing on the demand. Fin" rel="nofollow">inally, I had the chance to set long-term goals and the overall implementation process for the department and the organization in" rel="nofollow">in general.
