After reading Shahat, An Egyptian, write a three to five page essay addressing the following issues.
Shahat is a young Egyptian man of roughly college age. Compare his situation with yours. What are the major issues that confront him? Are they the same or different from issues an American man of the same age might face? Are his responses similar to those you might make? If not, why not? What do you find most different about the society he lives in? What elements does it share with all human societies?
As we saw last week, the institutions of power in any society can be political, social. economic or religious. What are the institutions of power in Shahat's society? How is power exercised? How do these institutions compare to those in your own life?
Finally, what examples of prejudice do you find in his society? Are they rational? How does it compare with prejudice here?
