To write these short essays, you MUST have access to the two books:

1. Something New Under the Sun by John Robert McNeill
2. Green Land, Brown Land, Black Land by James C. McCann

Instruction
Write short essays (2-3 pp) in response to the following questions. Make sure your essay has an introductory and a concluding paragraph, and support the points you make in body paragraphs with specific evidence. Please make sure your answer makes a historical claim, and use historical cases where needed.

Essay Qs:

1. According to James McCann, what is the master narrative of African deforestation and soil degradation, and how might we best explain African environmental history against the grain of that master narrative?
2. How does McNeill characterize the long-term history of soil erosion? What, if anything, makes the current period of soil erosion qualitatively or quantitatively different from earlier periods?
