Select a human rights issue and two countries in which this issue has significance. It might be interesting to select two countries that are quite different, for the purpose of comparison (eg. different culturally, economically, geographically or politically). However, you can pick any two countries you like.
Compare and critique how this human rights issue is experienced, and dealt with, in these two countries. Points to consider include:
• Who is most affected by the issue and what are the impacts?
• What factors influence understandings of human rights in these countries and the ways that
human rights are enacted/not enacted?
• How are human rights instruments such as conventions applied and what effects do they
have?
• Who is involved in upholding and advocating for human rights in relation to this issue and what
forms of activism are important?
• How might this issue change in these countries in the future and what factors might influence
this change? (ie. are things likely to get better or worse and why?)
• How does this influence the ways that human services are designed, delivered and accessed?
What roles do human services practitioners and policymakers have in human rights and social justice in these countries?
