Siyasanda’s Case Study: Developmental Theories

She is part of a small social circle at school, but otherwise does not really engage socially or attend any of the school’s social functions. Siyasanda also finds it difficult to describe herself as a person without describing her personal circumstances.

Siyasanda was raised singlehandedly by her mother after her father died tragically in a mining accident when she was a year old. Additionally, her mother, Boniswa, is a domestic worker/nanny and has to leave the house at 4:30 am every morning to get to her employers, the Humphreys, who lives in Sandton, Johannesburg. Boniswa has been working for the Humphreys for the past 11 years. Boniswa’s duties included cleaning the house and caring for her employers’ children; she has to wake and prepare the children for school. Because of the Humphreys are not able to let her stay on their property, she has to travel early in the morning and leave late in the evening.

The student’s ability to: unpack and demonstrate their understanding of a case, to apply a theoretical approach and literature to better understand and make sense of a case and to propose applicably and alternative solutions to the presenting problem/s embedded in the case study will be assessed.
