2.Conduct a review of the controversy surrounding “Einstein’s Wife

Order Description In 2003 the Public Broadcasting Service in the United States, generally known as PBS, aired “Einstein’s Wife,” a program about Albert Einstein’s first wife, Mileva Mari?. The program, largely the work of Australian journalist Geraldine Hilton, essentially contended that Mari? was a “brilliant mathematician” whose role in the celebrated Annus Mirabilis Papers of 1905 has not been properly recognized. It was by no means the first time that speculation had been raised about whether Mileva Mari? had contributed to Einstein’s work. But this particular documentary, implicitly given the stamp of approval by a highly respected educational broadcaster and supplied with its own web site, was widely broadcast and appeared to be very influential at getting across its point. For example, over 70 per cent of those who responded to an online poll thought that Mileva Mari? had contributed to Einstein’s work. The program also angered a number of people and caused considerable controversy. Retired British physicist Allen Esterson took particular exception to the some of the claims made in “Einstein’s Wife,” as did Alberto A. Martinez, a research fellow at the Centre for Einstein Studies. Esterson and Martinez contended that the program contained a considerable number of inaccuracies, dubious claims, and misconceptions, if not outright misrepresentations. Eventually, the issue ended up with the PBS Ombudsman, Michael Getler, who reported on the matter in December 2006. In his report, Getler made a number of suggestions for the PBS website. Conduct a review of the controversy surrounding “Einstein’s Wife” and to assess what that controversy reveals about the way in which the history of science is done. Are Allen Esterson and Alberto A. Martinez merely part of a narrow minded “old guard” or “old boys’ network” unwilling to consider new interpretations in an effort to defend their turf? Or were the writers and producers of “Einstein’s Wife” willing to “bend” the evidence in an effort to promote their own political agenda?
