Sociology Order Description Sociologists study social phenomena that are relevant to them in" rel="nofollow">in terms of the social climate in" rel="nofollow">in which they live. Today’s climate in" rel="nofollow">involves: • the aftermath of a war in" rel="nofollow">in Iraq that left Iraq ripe for Isis militants, • a radical Sunni group determin" rel="nofollow">ined to return Iraq to pre-war Sunni control, • a strugglin" rel="nofollow">ing economic recovery from a deep recession at home, • the crashin" rel="nofollow">ing auto and housin" rel="nofollow">ing in" rel="nofollow">industries resultin" rel="nofollow">ing in" rel="nofollow">in huge unemployment and mass foreclosures, and • a schism between political parties so wide that nothin" rel="nofollow">ing is bein" rel="nofollow">ing accomplished as each party works diligently to stop the other party from passin" rel="nofollow">ing legislation. With all of this upheaval, it is not surprisin" rel="nofollow">ing that many sociologists are now researchin" rel="nofollow">ing and writin" rel="nofollow">ing about terrorists, economic upheaval, and the loss of identity due to the loss of jobs. Durin" rel="nofollow">ing all of this turmoil, the first African American was elected President of the United States. Many changes have taken place sin" rel="nofollow">ince President Obama’s election and reelection to the White House. Few of these changes have been debated as much as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). For this assignment, you will use your sociological imagin" rel="nofollow">ination to ferret out some of the issues behin" rel="nofollow">ind this debate. • Go to the government healthcare website and fin" rel="nofollow">ind three facts about the ACA. List and describe each fact. • Usin" rel="nofollow">ing your understandin" rel="nofollow">ing of theory and the chart on page 17 of your textbook, explain" rel="nofollow">in how a functionalist, conflict theorist, and in" rel="nofollow">interactionist would explain" rel="nofollow">in the Affordable Care Act. Be sure to discuss the ACA in" rel="nofollow">in terms of each perspective’s view of the in" rel="nofollow">individual, social order, and social change. o Do not debate the ACA itself. Rather, use these perspectives to understand how a sociologist studies the Act. • In a sentence or two, describe your personal beliefs about the ACA. • Use sociological imagin" rel="nofollow">ination to explain" rel="nofollow">in how you developed your beliefs concernin" rel="nofollow">ing the Act. Include a discussion of a min" rel="nofollow">inimum of two of the followin" rel="nofollow">ing: race, class, gender, religious and political affiliations, and how bein" rel="nofollow">ing part of these groups affects your thoughts on the Act. • Fin" rel="nofollow">inally, usin" rel="nofollow">ing the materials in" rel="nofollow">in Chapter 2, how might you study people’s beliefs about the ACA? Describe the steps you would follow in" rel="nofollow">in the research process to answer this question. Be sure to describe your study, the method, and a few specific questions you would ask.
