For this assignment, you will analyze 3 different families represented in the media. You can pick families from television or movies. The primary purpose of this paper is to examine how diverse families are depicted in mainstream media. You are required to pick 3 families that challenge our traditional views of family. Examples include blended families, single-parent households, same-sex families, extended families living in one household. Feel free to get creative with which families you choose. There is no right or wrong answer, you just need to justify why you chose the families you did. Basically, you want to examine families that are different than your typical “mother-father with two biological children household.” For example, you can discuss the family in the television show Pose and discuss chosen families, stigma, and challenges LGBTQ youth face. Or, you can choose a show like Shameless where the children basically parent themselves. In your conclusion, you also need to discuss why these forms of media are important for expanding our definitions and constructions of what a family looks like. Your paper must be 3-5 pages, double spaced, with 1-in margins. Provide in-text citations and a reference page (not included in your page requirement) at the end of your paper. You do not have to include outside academic sources for this paper. However, you do need to cite some form of video clip or description for the television show or movie you are analyzing. You also need to include at least 3 readings from the course to help you describe your shows/movies.
