Sociology of Immigration

Sociology of Immigration Order Description You will be expected to produce a paper at the end of the term. Your paper should be10 - 12 pages long, typed, double-spaced, printed in a normal-sized font (e.g. Times Roman) with 1-inch margins. For this paper, you need to make a sociological argument about an issue related to immigration. The paper involves an “argument” in the sense that you are going to make a point or observation and back it up with some scholarly evidence (drawing from both course material and your own research). Maybe you are interested in questions of race and mobility under neoliberalism; maybe you are interested in how the social imaginary is changing organizing strategies across transnational networks; maybe you are interested in the role of remittances in shaping (migrant) subjectivities. I leave the final decision up to you. Just remember that the content should be explicitly relevant to the course. You will need at least 3 citations from course readings and at least 3 outside academic sources (generally speaking journal articles and books are considered academic sources). If you’re not sure, come and see me. But just as a point of caution, it is better to over-cite and research for a paper than to under-research. Wikipedia and other similar electronic material do not count as academic sources. When you make reference to an article or book, it should be clear why you are referencing it and that you understand the material you are citing. Don’t just reference material as a way to generate Evaluation criteria: · Does the paper have a clear and precisely stated purpose or question? Do you do a good job at establishing the importance of this line of research? Does it stay well within the parameters of this course? · Does the paper have a clear and coherent statement of the argument / purpose of the paper? · Do you do a good job of establishing this argument in a logical way?
