Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was born Isabella Baumfree in Hurley, New York. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Baumfree, both former slaves from Guinea who were sold to different owners when Sojourner was just an infant. As a young girl, she worked as a house servant and at age nine she was sold for the first time for $100. Throughout her life, Sojourner Truth experienced multiple instances of injustice related to race and gender. In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth in order to reflect her newfound religious faith and commitment to preaching against oppression throughout America.
