Overview
For this week's discussion each of you has been assigned a type of specialty court. You will be
researching the type of court you are assigned and answering a series of questions. You will also
compare your assigned court to at least one other type of court assigned to a peer.
Part 1 - Initial Research
- Go to the Center for Court Innovation's website (click here (Links to an external site.))
- Click on the programs link (top of the page) and then find the link that corresponds to your assigned
specialty court (see the first reply in the discussion below to find your assigned court)(Harlem Reentry
Court)
- Research your assigned specialty court by clicking through the links associated with your court on the
website. There are lots of articles, interviews, and links to actual courts in NY.
- Post a response to each of the following questions as a reply to my original post corresponding to your
assigned court type.
Q1 - What do you see as the three (3) most important characteristics of your assigned specialty court?
Q2 - What are two (2) ways your assigned specialty court is similar to traditional criminal courts and two
(2) ways your assigned specialty court is different from traditional criminal courts?
Q3 - How might your assigned court reduce (or increase) the potential for bias in the treatment of
offenders and/or reduce (or increase) the formal mechanisms of control within the criminal justice
system?
Q4 - Include one example of your assigned specialty court outside of NY state. (Provide link to website)
