Beginning of Andy Warhol’s Artistic Career 1. Andy graduated with a Bachelor’s in fine art in 1949. a. Moved to New York City to pursue a career as a commercial artist. b. He landed a job with Glamour magazine. 2. According to Warhol.org, he became one of the most successful commercial artists of the 195os after acquiring this job. B. Andy’s most successful part of his career was in the 605. 1. He shifted his focus to painting. a. In 1961, he created pop art as we know it today. 1 b. In 1962, he created the “32 paintings of Campbell soup cans”. i (1) These small paintings became one of his most famous works of art. (2) Each of these paintings were hand-painted, except for the fleur-de-lis at the bottom of every can which was stamped on. c. The success of the paintings granted him and pop art national recognition. d. He also made paintings advertising vacuum cleaners, Coca-Cola, and even hamburgers. e. After becoming famous, he received many commissions from socialites and celebrities for self-portraits. (l) The portraits were painted using very bright colors. (2) Some of his most famous customers were: Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, 7 Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, and Mao Zedong. (3) In 2008, his painting named “Eight Elvises” sold for over 100 million dollars. 2. In 1964, he opened his very own art studio named “The Factory”. a. Andy Warhol’s Factory quickly became one of New York City’s main tourist attractions. b. It was also known for its lavish parties. C. Andy Warhol’s career started slowing down during the 703. 1. In 1968, Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanas according to the NY Daily News. a. She was a radical feminist who wanted to be a writer. b. She starred in one of Warhol’s films, but was mad because Warhol refused to include one of the scripts she wrote. c. She was arrested and later pleaded guilty to the crime. 2. Luckily, Warhol survived this attempt against his life. 3. From that point forward, he focused on other art medias (Andy Warhol A Documentary Film). a. He erte two books. (1) The first one was Philosophy of Andy Warhol. (2) The second was Exposures. b. He also made over 60 other films. c. His most notable were Sleep and Eat. (1) Sleep is about poet John Giorno sleeping for six hours. (2) Eat is about a man eating a mushroom for 45 minutes. d. He also made a few sculptures during this period. D. In the 1980, he focused on the television industry.
