Sport Matters Cultural Plunge Project

The culminating project for the course is the ‘Sports Matters’ Cultural Plunge Project. The purpose of the Cultural Plunge project is to provide you with the opportunity to experience a sport or physical activity that you are unfamiliar with and examine that sport from a sociological lens and reflect on how the experience might influence your professional practice.

  1. Select a sport or physical activity that you are unfamiliar and explain why you selected it.
  2. If possible, attend an event where the sport is being played or practiced .
  3. Describe the sport or activity you plunged into and some information about why you chose this sport. Provide a brief history of the sport/physical activity, any notable figures, and why this sport matters to its participants and fans .
  4. Analyze the sport or physical activity from a sociological perspective. Consider issues such as race / ethnicity, class, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, media representations of the sport, etc .
  5. Describe the value of the experience from the perspective of a sport psychology practitioner, a coach, or leader .
