You are required to write two short (minimum 2-3 pages*) papers on topics covered in the assigned texts and
how you relate to them. These essays are designed to encourage you to engage one or more ideas from the
readings in greater depth and more personally than we would pursue in our group discussions. These may be
fairly informal in tone, but citations are required. You have two areas to cover within each response paper:
- What are the authors’ main points? What themes are present across the week’s readings? How do these
texts build upon our previous readings? - What is your relationship to the week’s readings and concepts? What has come up for you this week? What
is your response to the authors? How do these readings challenge what you’ve known before about identity
and social justice?
You should be sure to lean toward analysis rather than just summary. These papers should be well focused
(i.e. narrow) because of their brevity. All essays will be graded according to the depth of analysis and personal
reflections.
