Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment in social interactions and communication. ASD is most often diagnosed in childhood as the symptoms begin to become clearer as a child socially develops and begins interacting with peers. Individuals diagnosed with ASD continue to experience the difficulties associated with social interaction into adulthood.
Other common characteristic symptoms of ASD include a lack of understanding of social cues and empathy. Children with ASD might also exhibit repetitive movements like rocking or head-banging as well as placing objects or toys in a line excessively. Sensitivity to sensory input is another common symptom associated with ASD.
The term “spectrum” is used for discussing the severity of symptoms associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Similar to other disorders, the symptoms of ASD are experienced along a spectrum or continuum in which some individuals experience more mild or severe symptoms.
The exact cause of ASD is still unknown although research is beginning to indicate a genetic factor. Research regarding the cause and expression of ASD is on-going.
The following experiential activity will demonstrate the sensitivity to sensory input that many individuals with ASD experience. Try to imagine what living life with this sensitivity would feel like.
