Description
(Intended as a capstone course to be taken in a student¿s last 6 credits of major coursework.) Prerequisites: IFSM 438 and IFSM 461. A
practical application of the knowledge and experience gained from previous study in information systems management. The aim is to
demonstrate a mastery of information systems and management concepts. Emerging issues and trends in information systems, management
are considered.
Course Introduction
The information systems management (IFSM) capstone integrates coursework, knowledge, skills and learning to enable you to demonstrate a
broad mastery of learning outcomes from across the IFSM curriculum. The expectation is that you will take the capstone in the last 6 hours of
your undergraduate education. This is a singular opportunity as an IFSM major to demonstrate that you have assimilated the various learning
outcomes from the divergent courses taken throughout college.
The capstone provides for learning, but not in the traditional sense because no new material is taught. You will be presented with a unique
IFSM case study or problem that will examine your ability to correctly apply learning and knowledge from previous IFSM courses, other college
courses, and professional experience. These multifaceted, "professional world" information technology (IT) and organizational case studies
and problems will require you to demonstrate competence in IT, effective writing, information literacy, critical analysis, and ethical decision
making.
You will be assigned to project teams that mirror professional environment situations where structured IT project management, systems
development life cycle (SDLC), systems analysis, cost analysis, business process analysis, and problem solving are used to craft enterprise
solutions that resolve problems and challenges or take advantage of business opportunities. Since there is no traditional final exam, the
products and deliverables resulting from your work and the team's collective work will be used to evaluate if the course outcomes have been
met.
Course Outcomes
Evaluate, select, and apply appropriate analytical and measurement methods/tools and system development life cycle (SDLC)
methodologies to meet organizational needs.
Research, assess, recommend/select, and implement information technology that aligns with business needs and meets business
objectives.
Effectively communicate with stakeholders orally, visually, and in writing to determine stakeholders' business requirements, explain how
their requirements will be met, and provide ongoing audience-appropriate information.
Responsibly protect organizations' critical information and assets by integrating cybersecurity best practices and risk management
throughout global enterprises.
Plan, execute, and evaluate technology solutions to achieve strategic goals by managing high-performing teams and projects.

Description of Standards for Determining Final Course Grade
Attendance, Participation and Classroom Etiquette:
Although attendance does not contribute to your grade, participation does. By registering for an on-line or hybrid course, you have made a
commitment to participate in your course discussions as well as other online activities. To contact your instructor, please use the conferencing
software, private messaging capability, or email links provided, which allow you to communicate with your instructor and classmates in a
virtual classroom, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please plan to participate regularly. You will note in the grading policy that your participation
counts towards your final grade. For this class, you are expected to participate in all discussions.
8/19/2020 IFSM 495 6380 Trends and Practical Applications in Information Systems Management (2208) > Syllabus | Concourse
https://umgc.campusconcourse.com/view_syllabus?course_id=165180 3/10
Responses should demonstrate critical thinking and comprehension of the discussion topic and are strengthened when supported by
additional research, and responses to classmates' postings should be constructive, expand upon points made, ask additional questions, and
contribute to the dialogue. A simple "good posting" or "I agree" is not a sufficient comment.
The Grading Rubric used for assessing participation is provided in the Discussion Area.
IT Technology and Management Trends
Early in the class, each student will select (from a list provided) a topic related to an IT technology or management trend. When the faculty
member approves a topic, the date for the student to have researched and posted a discussion on that topic will be assigned. Students are
expected to respond to these student-led discussions as assigned in the classroom. These will be part of weekly discussions throughout the
course.
This format is to ensure that all students have an opportunity to lead discussions and to benefit from seeing and responding to each others'
responses. Participation is defined by the quality as well as the quantity of your postings in the discussion. You will not gain any points by
merely reading the discussion postings. There will often be more than one discussion assigned for the week. You may expect the instructor
to participate in the discussions, but do not expect a response to every posting. If the instructor or another student poses a question to you,
you are expected to respond to it, as you would during a face-to-face classroom discussion. Each student is responsible for reviewing and
adhering to the UMGC academic policies that appear in the Additional Information section of this syllabus.
The Grading Rubric for the student-led discussions is posted in the Discussion Area.
Final Assessment
There is no final examination for this course.
Resubmission Policy
Assignments with a grade below 75% are allowed to be improved and resubmitted one time.
The resubmission must be made within 7 days of the date when the original assignment's grade was posted.
No resubmissions will be accepted after the last day of class, regardless of the initial grading date.
The highest grade possible on a resubmission is 75%.
Unless prior arrangements have been made between the faculty member and the student, assignments submitted past the due date will
count as the one resubmission and must be submitted within 7 days of the original due date.
For group assignments with a grade below 75%, the same conditions apply, except:
The grade of 75% or less must be the group grade, not an individual's grade.
The group must agree to resubmit the assignment. If the group does not agree to resubmit even if the group grade is under 75% then no
resubmission is allowed.
Late Policy
A late assignment will be penalized unless a major accident, illness, or deployment (for active duty military), with supporting documentation,
prevents a student from submitting their assignment on time. Late discussion posts will not be accepted.
Students should keep their instructor and their team informed in advance about military deployments or other events that may impact their
progress and participation in the course.
The handling of late assignments and the nature of the late penalty is at the sole discretion of the instructor, except for assignments that can
be resubmitted.
No assignments will be accepted after the last day of class regardless of the circumstances.
Extra Credit
Extra credit is not available.
Project Descriptions
The major assignment for this class is the development of a Business Case, which will be done as a group project, with some individual
assignments. The Business Case Project in total is worth 55% (55 points) of your overall course grade. The remaining 45% consists of an
individual technology assignment (15 points), an individual grade on teamwork and project management (15 points) and discussion
participation (15 points, approximately 2 points per week). The due dates for each assignment can be found in the Course Schedule. The
detailed instructions and rubrics for each assignment are located under Content. Also under Content is a document titled “Group Project
Instructions” that explains how the groups will manage themselves and general requirements for deliverables.

The Business Case assignment is a course-long team project with multiple individual and group deliverables spaced throughout the course.
Students will be expected to call upon a variety of learning experiences from the materials provided, and from previous IFSM courses such as
IT project management and systems analysis and design. In addition, students will need to demonstrate the critical thinking, problem solving
and effective writing skills developed throughout their college and professional careers. Each individual and group assignment is designed to
allow students to apply their learning to a typical case study.
Like the topics for the weekly participation discussions, the case study for this project was uniquely selected for this capstone course.
Students will be provided with a case study that describes a major change that affects the organization’s strategic direction, business model
and business processes. From this enterprise perspective, students will be required to dissect and analyze the case study to develop a
proposed IT solution and a business case to support their proposal. Each assignment consists of one or more sections of the business case.
The final deliverable is a consolidated Business Case that follows the outline provided.
The deliverables for the individual and group assignments will require students to develop files that can be read using Microsoft Word and/or
Excel. The deliverables are as follows:
