This assignment relates to the Unit Learning Objectives of:
- Interpret, assess and appraise scientific evidence and health related reports that underpin health science practice and research
- Distinguish and explain different research paradigms and research designs and/or methodologies used in health science
- Select and apply appropriate analysis methods for the various types of data collected in health science.
Instructions
You will write a systematic literature review and undertake a quality appraisal that assesses the following:
Topic: In your tutorial group, you will choose one topic area that is of interest to you. In the tutorial in week one, you will sign up to a topic and/or a group. If you are not assigned to a group, you will be assigned to one in the topic of your choice.
The topics will be:
• Childhood Diabetes
• Depression in Adolescence,
• Health and people living with Intellectual Disability
• Osteoarthritis.
Working in groups of 4 people, you will work through the associated systematic review template (see canvas). In weeks 1-3 in the lectures, you will learn the information that you need to know to undertake the review. Working in groups, you will identify the research question, and design the data collection methods, search strategy, which database you will undertake. You will then undertake the review using PRISMA guidelines.
The final report will be the completed systematic review template and will be marked according to the rubric. Included in the report will be:
• Title page (see above)
• Table of contents (completed)
• Abstract
• Definitions
• Background – what is the background to the topic (appropriately cited references)
• Objectives o Focused research question (designed in SPINE or PICO format – discussed in week 2) o Primary and secondary objectives
• Criteria for studies to be included in the review o Inclusion and exclusion criteria o What types of study will you include o What are your outcomes or context of interest o What type of publications will you be looking at
• Search Strategy o Use at least 4 databases – tell us why you have chosen those ones o Put the keywords that you search
• Search results o Place in the table f
• Search Yield o Design a diagram similar to the one in the document with your information there
• Completed PRISMA flow diagram
• Methods of the review o What forms did you use to extract the data
o What data table did you use
o Why
Note – it is not necessary to undertake a meta analysis
• Discussion o Summarise the findings and why you think this using the evidence from the critical appraisal.
Reference list
You will need to reference using APA 6th citation and reference style. References may be used to define concepts (ideas), show the sources of data, and provide evidence to back up claims.
Sources may include:
- Data from Australian Bureau of Statistics or Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2. Peer-reviewed journal articles
- Text books
- Government websites
- Association websites e.g. Alzheimer’s Australia etc.
References must be from reputable sources, and correctly cited. This demonstrates that you can (a) find academic literature (b) synthesize the ideas that you discover from the literature and (c) use that literature to support your discussion.
