Understandin" rel="nofollow">ing humanities through the arts, beliefs, customs, practices, values, and behaviors is an essential part of this course. By attendin" rel="nofollow">ing cultural events or experiencin" rel="nofollow">ing them through available forms of media, you will be able to experience the diverse offerin" rel="nofollow">ings of culture and artistic expression found in" rel="nofollow">in various communities. Experiencin" rel="nofollow">ing cultural events outside of the classroom will broaden your horizons and allow you to gain" rel="nofollow">in unique in" rel="nofollow">insight in" rel="nofollow">into your own community as well as a broader global perspective of our world's diverse cultures. After selectin" rel="nofollow">ing and experiencin" rel="nofollow">ing a cultural event, you will write a four-page paper that relates it to what you have learned about ideas, culture, and the arts in" rel="nofollow">in humanities. You are strongly encouraged to attend a cultural event in" rel="nofollow">in person, but if you are unable to do so, you may experience an event through available forms of media, such as a learnin" rel="nofollow">ing-based television program or Internet video. (It is important to see and hear the event, so please do not simply read an article about it!) What is the defin" rel="nofollow">inition of a cultural event? Cultural events in" rel="nofollow">include performances or displays of artistic expression, but those are not the only kin" rel="nofollow">inds of cultural events. Cultural events could in" rel="nofollow">include family customs or religious ceremonies, but you are strongly encouraged to seek an event representin" rel="nofollow">ing a culture different from your own. Listed below are some examples, and if you are in" rel="nofollow">in doubt about whether the event will be suitable, please consult with your faculty member. Cultural events may in" rel="nofollow">include but are not limited to: A visit to an art museum (Some museums have virtual tours onlin" rel="nofollow">ine, so look for one if you are unable to physically visit an art museum.) A cultural celebration in" rel="nofollow">in its own settin" rel="nofollow">ing (i.e., Carnival in" rel="nofollow">in Rio de Janiero or The Hogbetsotso Festival in" rel="nofollow">in Ghana) A church service or other religious ritual Forms of entertain" rel="nofollow">inment that are representative of a particular culture, such as flamenco dancin" rel="nofollow">ing or a sitar concert For each of your chosen cultural events, please consider the followin" rel="nofollow">ing as you write your paper. You should refer to and cite credible sources to address some of these questions. Identify the cultural event. What is it? How did you "experience" it? Did you attend in" rel="nofollow">in person or watch it onlin" rel="nofollow">ine? Describe the cultural event as it reflects the culture of origin" rel="nofollow">in. Consider the ideas, beliefs, and practices of the people. What is the history of the cultural event? Consider the historical context, the events or opin" rel="nofollow">inions that surrounded the origin" rel="nofollow">ination of the event and the era in" rel="nofollow">in which it began. Has the cultural event changed sin" rel="nofollow">ince it began? What similarities does this event have to at least one other cultural event in" rel="nofollow">in another part of the world? Provide an example and explain" rel="nofollow">in how they are similar and how they differ. Has this cultural event been in" rel="nofollow">influenced by other cultures?
