Testimony

Committees hold hearings to shed light on issues and debate bills. When debating a bill, committees’ decisions are limited to the following: 1) pass bill out of committee with a “do pass” recommendation; 2) reconsider bill at another time to consider possible amendments; 3) vote to kill the bill.

Testimony is not an academic paper. Rather, it is an opportunity to speak on record in support or opposition of pending legislation or administrative policy. Review examples of testimony prior to beginning this assignment and read the information on Canvas regarding preparing testimonies. Two examples can be found at these links: Pettigrew and Family Detention.

Prepare 3-4 pages of written testimony concerning a current bill being considered at either the local, state or federal level. The goal is take a stance as an advocate and support your position. Additionally, you may choose to focus on a problem at an organization, in the context that you are speaking to the Board of Directors regarding an agency policy.
