• Evidence-based practice: Evidence-based practice is the use of the best available evidence to guide clinical decision-making. Nurses demonstrate professional accountability in evidence-based practice by critically evaluating research findings, and by incorporating those findings into their practice.

In addition to clinical expertise, the nursing process, and evidence-based practice, nurses also demonstrate professional accountability by:

• Maintaining their licenses and certifications.
• Participating in continuing education.
• Reporting any errors or omissions in care.
• Advocating for their patients.
• Protecting the confidentiality of patient information.

Self-care is essential for nurses to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional health. Nurses who are well-cared-for are better able to provide safe and effective care to their patients.

There are many ways that nurses can incorporate self-care into their lives. Here are a few examples:

• Getting enough sleep.
• Eating a healthy diet.
• Exercising regularly.
• Taking breaks throughout the day.
• Delegating tasks to others.
• Saying no to requests when necessary.
• Seeking professional help if needed.

The Bible has a lot to say about self-care. In the book of Proverbs, it says, “Take care of yourself, for you are responsible for your own life.” (Proverbs 14:10) This verse emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our own health and well-being.

In the book of Matthew, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) This verse reminds us that we can find rest and peace in God.

Nurses who incorporate self-care into their lives are better able to provide safe and effective care to their patients. They are also more likely to avoid burnout and compassion fatigue. If you are a nurse, I encourage you to take care of yourself so that you can be the best nurse you can be.
