The dominance of the English language
Choose ONE of the project options below.
Languages are an important part of our existence and yet, they are increasingly under threat. Studies show that by the end of this century, over half of the languages spoken today will have disappeared. Why does language matter? Why should we care about preserving languages in our globalized world?
Building on the knowledge you acquired in Unit 3 on Gender and Development, write a three-part reflective response on:
1. The global dimension. What progress has been made on gender equality globally? Pick two countries and use these to illustrate successes and challenges.2. The national dimension. The UAE has made great progress on gender equality but what, in your view, are the remaining challenges?3. Self-reflection. How does this relate to you as a young person in the UAE and this region? How is this connected to how you live your own life and the choices you make?
Which ONE problem from those listed below do you think is the most worrying? Building on the knowledge you acquired from (and/or outside) this course, explain why this is of concern.
-- Rising income inequality-- Climate change -- Overuse of resources,-- Habitat destruction -- The dominance of the English language-- Loss of cultural diversity
