Here are some of the historical issues related to the employment of minorities and women in policing:
- Women: Women were first hired as police officers in the late 1800s, but they were often assigned to non-enforcement roles, such as clerical work. It was not until the 1970s that women began to be hired in large numbers for patrol duties.
- Minorities: Minorities, including African Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos, have also faced discrimination in policing. For example, in the early 1900s, many police departments had policies that prohibited the hiring of black officers. Even after these policies were lifted, minorities were often subjected to discrimination in the workplace.
