The FIFA World Cup

Instructions:
The FIFA World Cup™ will be held in Qatar in 2022. This is the first time that an Arab and
Muslim nation is hosting the World Cup. It is one of the biggest events in the world, and Qatar
and the Middle East will be in the global spotlight. Over 1 billion people watched the final at the
last World Cup and over 1 million visitors are expected to come to Qatar during this event.
Although some visitors are only interested in the football matches, many will also be interested
in Qatar, the country, the people and the culture. The organizers of the event, Supreme
Committee for Delivery & Legacy and FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ LLC, recognize this and
have set out objectives to promote intercultural exchange and understanding. The objectives
are detailed in their Sustainability Strategy: www.qatar2022.qa/sustainability and
https://www.qatar2

One of the main strategic objective is to: Promote cultural exchange among parties engaged
with the FIFA World Cup 2022™, with a focus on enhancing understanding of the culture of
Qatar and the region They have also specified that they will be “developing and distributing
guidance to participants, attendees and local communities that support their preparation for
intercultural exchange during the FIFA World Cup 2022™, and identifies and works to prevent
practices that may be considered discriminatory or disrespectful by others.” After reading the
objectives of the organizers complete the assignments below.
This project will be broken down into the following parts and the total project will account for
50% of your final grade.
Part 1: Intercultural Guidance Critique: Analyze key complexities of preparing and delivering
intercultural guidance. You will find that many embassies, multinational companies,
governments and schools have documents outlining some intercultural guidance. What is the
purpose of an intercultural guidance? Why is this guidance required? How can a guide foster
intercultural exchange? Who should be represented and how? What are common
representations/narratives regarding your culture that you would like to change and why? This
paper should be 2000 words.
Part 2: Short Research Assignments: This course introduced you to the four subfields of
Anthropology and below you will find an assignment for 3 out of the 4. Please choose only 2
topics from the 3 listed below and delve deeper into your chosen subfields. Your response
should be at least 2 pages (minimum 1000 words) and you should draw on eight concepts from
your textbook. Underline and bold each concept. A. Biological Anthropology – Racism Race is a
social construct with very real consequences. As with many social constructs they vary
depending on location. Discuss racism in the local and regional context. B. Language Give
examples of local nonverbal communication and the specific contexts they are used and their
social significance. In addition, outline some important ‘practices that may be considered
discriminatory or disrespectful by others. C. Cultural Anthropology 2 Provide a recommendation
of which aspects of the local culture should be included and showcased in the intercultural
guidance, support your recommendations.
Points of clarification:

  1. What do I mean by "a group of people?" Cultural models are shared by a group of people that
have some common base of experience in the world that provides them at least some common
understanding of that world. The 'group of people' that you choose for this project must have
some common base of experience that relates to the thing that you are studying.
  2. Try to stay focused on a tight group of questions. It is very easy to get so diffused with the
questions that you ask that you don't end up with a coherent set of observations for your
analysis. Focus on a particular group of people to address your questions (so that you can
document common experiences among them), but also focus your questions and observations
so that they cohere around a particular topic rather than being scattered all over the place.
  3. Keep notes about your observations/interviews. If you decide to incorporate field observations
include a one page summary. Record your interviews so that you can go back to the important
things that your participants said or did.
  4. Include 3 pieces of academic literature other than your text that you find to think about how
you will research your topic. What did the author of the articles or chapters that you read do to
study their topic? What evidence did they collect and use to make their argument about the
cultural group or phenomenon that they were studying? Use these as a model for your own
    project.
  5. Intercultural Guidance Critique: This paper should be four to six pages long (2000 words),
double spaced, font size 12. 2.
Two Short Research Assignments: This is where you demonstrate your capacity to 'think
anthropologically' about the topics that you pick. This write-up should demonstrate not only an
exploration of your cultural awareness and ability to describe aspects of it but also provide an
in-depth analysis, through a holistic perspective, of the culture and the topic that you research
along with any people that you interviewed or observed. It should draw from concepts in the
course readings, lectures, and the literature that you collected as well as the observations and
interviews that you collected. The point is to dig down to the cultural models and assumptions
inherent in the things which you examined.
