POST 1) The five goals of contemporary criminal sentencing are retribution, incapacitate, deterrence, rehabilitation, and restoration. Retribution is the perceived goal for punishment out of vengeance. An example of retribution sentencing would be the death sentence. Incapacitate sentencing is the usage of imprisonment to prevent harm on society inflicted by the offender. Deterrence sentencing is used to convince people that crimes are not worth the punishment. The goal of deterrence is to instill fear into current and future offenders to prevent them from committing crimes. Rehabilitation is the goal to reform an offender and reduce the number of crimes. Lastly, Restoration is the goal of sentencing that helps the victims and their families through the emotional and physical journey. I think the primary goal of sentencing should be rehabilitation. Obviously, this would not work for all situations, but a large portion of the prison population is repeat offenders or offenders who have a difficult time getting their feet on the ground. Often offenders will re-offend because it is the only way to make money, to get food in their stomachs, or put a roof over their head. If there was a good rehabilitation program in place for offenders, then crime rates would decrease substantially. In certain situations, rehabilitation would not work. In a case of a child rapist or serial murderer, rehabilitation should not be an option. However, for cases involving theft, or mild drug use I think rehabilitation would be beneficial. A huge problem with our society nowadays is that is it easier to be a criminal than it is to be a successful human which leads to crimes being committed and the prison population becoming over populated. Resources to rehabilitate would help impact offenders and society in a positive way!
POST 2) The five goals and Purposes of sentencing as described in chapter eleven of Criminal Justice Today are as follows: The sentencing goal for retribution would have as its purpose: A just deserts perspective that emphasizes taking revenge on a criminal perpetrator or group of offenders. The sentencing goal for Incapacitate would have as its purpose; The use of imprisonment or other means to reduce the likelihood that a particular offender will commit more crime. The sentencing goal for Deterrence would have as its purpose: A sentencing rationale that seeks to inhibit criminal behavior through punishment or the fear of punishment. The sentencing goal for rehabilitation would have as its purpose: The attempt to reform a criminal offender. The sentencing goal for restoration would have as its purpose; A goal of sentencing that seeks to make the victim whole again.
