The Handmaid's Tale compared to Pretty Little Liars (television shows)

Compare the television show "The Handmaid's Tale" to the television show "Pretty Little Liars" in their similar themes of "identity" with the use of mise-en-scene in order to make this comparison. Specifically focusing on the main characters finding their identity and the aspects of mise -en-scene that both shows have in common, like the red clothing, make-up, facial expression, etc.
Here are the guidelines: Write an 8-10 page critical essay focusing on ONE of the four cinematic aspects we've been exploring (mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, or sound) and compare how it is used in The Handmaid's Tale television series AND in one other film/show/series outside of class that shares the same theme. You may focus in closely on this essay--on lighting or costume or music only, for example. Your essay must include a thesis statement with a clear position (defined in a sentence at the end of your introduction paragraph) and use specific examples from the series to back up your points. Discuss recognizable cinematic elements in addition to theme/treatment of topic. Find and read at least three critical article on The Handmaid's Tale (available via the Auraria library databases) and/or your other selected text—they may focus on the novel instead of the series if that is useful. Integrate these articles as you put together your essay. You may also utilize our textbook and other scholarly materials you may find--just be sure to cite properly--but those will be in addition to the articles you find in the library databases.
