THE HISTORY & HERITAGE OF AMERICAN CIVIL ENGINEERING

The development of civilization (U.S. in particular) has been and continues to be achieved through the work of civil engineers. In a relatively short period of time (500 years +/-), short in a historical context, the U.S. has gone from a primitive culture to become the most advanced society on the planet. This transition is the result of the ingenuity, leadership, dedication and hard work by many people, including civil engineers. The planning, design and construction of the nation’s infrastructure (canals, railroads, highways, bridges, water supply and sewerage systems, etc.) by civil engineers has led to the expansion and development of the country, growth of the cities and development of our abundant natural resources.

There are many examples in the literature of historic civil engineering works and the civil engineers involved in those projects. Your assignment is to research a project, or civil engineer, of your own choosing and prepare a written and oral report
