The History of Comedy

Tackle a paper that focuses on the history of comedy. Perhaps looking at how it's evolved over time. I'll attach class notes along with any materials I have that would be helpful. There is a lot of freedom with this paper so it doesn't need to be tied to any one thing.

"This assignment asks you to compose a public lecture on a topic from the course that interests you and to illustrate it with historical or contemporary examples. In composing these lectures, you should demonstrate both command of the course materials and the ability to apply them outside of the class content."

(1) A clear exposition of the topic, including a working definition or explanation of the concept as drawn from class lectures, readings, and personal knowledge.

(2) An explanation of why the topic should be of interest to the general public. The reasons may be as varied as the concepts chosen. They may include political, ethical, moral, religious, aesthetic, or other social concerns. They may emphasize greater enjoyment of the pleasures of spectatorship. They may illustrate important connections between individuals or groups or societies or redress misunderstandings and prejudices that occur between them.
You are welcome to approach this from any ideological position and will be treated with respect for your own beliefs and commitments. You will not be penalized for expressing your own perspective, but you should expect a critical response meant to help you improve your intellectual development.

(3) At least one specific illustration or example of the topic—and preferably as many more as the lecture warrants—in order to assist the audience in understanding the concept and its implications. Again, you have countless options. You may draw from historical or contemporary periods. You may utilize personal or widely known cases or offer examples from mainstream or underground entertainment. You may examine an entire comedic tradition such as standup comedy or focus on a single scene in one specific sitcom.
