Imagine the year is 1946. Imagine moreover that you are a writer for a major women’s magazine. Congratulations! Your editor has just given you a major assignment to write an article on the last 25 years of Women in the United States. The title of your article will be “American Women: Where We’ve Been and Where We’re Going!!! From the Roaring 20’s to today and beyond”
Your article should discuss the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. In addition, your article should look to the future. Some topics you might want to discuss, (but you certainly do not HAVE to discuss)
might be the flapper era, Women’s suffrage, the Great Depression, Rosie the Riveter, growth of suburbia and the upcoming Baby Boom. Your “audience” is probably upper middle-class white women, but you can discuss issues of class and race if you can do so in a way that would be palatable (tasty, or appealing) to your audience. Content is important, but style also counts in this essay as well. You might want to watch “The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter” to get a sense of what women were thinking and how they expressed themselves.
