B. A researcher wants to observe how newcomers to Alcoholics (or Gamblers or Overeaters) Anonymous are received by and integrated into the group. The trouble is that in order to protect the privacy of attendees, most of the AA meetings are only open to those who have alcoholism and researchers are not welcome. The researcher knows that the only way to “get in” is to employ deception. Is this ethical? Do the benefits (understanding a recovery program) outweigh the potential harm (members may feel violated and the anonymity of the program compromised)?
