"The Lottery"

In Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery,” community members question the lottery and its use, but ultimately go through with the ritual to its grisly end. This action shows that people may tend to hold to a tradition despite logical arguments against it.

I want you to address the following: Do we have the right to criticize and challenge traditions and authority in society? How far should we go in changing what we don’t like? Are we justified in using violence to change society?
The Duality of Human Nature: Examine the characters as they relate to this theme. Which figures show two sides of humanity? Which characters are seemingly good-natured; however, they show a different side during the events of the lottery. Make sure you have three different characters or three different moments where a character(s) show two sides.
