The most important ethical rule of engagement for social media to me is respect. I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristic. Social media platforms should create a space where everyone feels safe and welcome to express themselves.
I had one experience where I personally felt a sense of ethical breach with a social media platform. I was using a platform to connect with friends and family, and I saw a post that was making fun of someone’s appearance. I felt that the post was disrespectful and hurtful, and I reported it to the platform. The platform took down the post, but I still felt uneasy about the experience.
