The Old English language of the Anglo-Saxon people

  1. What are some of the linguistic features of the Old English language of the Anglo-Saxon people? Compare these with modern english where possible, to discuss which features have been lost and which have remained. You may discuss sounds (consonants and vowels), vocabulary, grammar, suffixes, verbs, nouns, or any other aspect we have covered in class or in the textbooks etc.
  2. Write out a detailed history of the important historical, cultural, and linguistic developments for English, starting from pre-English times (Indo-European) and going to the Mid-1400s.
  3. Compare Old English to Middle English. Describe some specific differences and what changes the language underwent from 1100-1450 or so. Discuss sounds, vocabulary, word classes, and/or grammar etc.
