One theme that has continuously been highlighted in this course is the presence of African American history in today's society, whether it be cultural remnants/norms or systems of racial oppression that persist. Many people view historical study as benign or passive--simply learning of the past. What I hope is made clear through this course is that African American history is not simply past. Activists from Du Bois to Malcolm X believed that the education of Black history was the first step towards uprooting racism.
