Write a 2–3 page (double spaced) review of your article from Perspectives in New Music engaging with the
material presented by the author.
If you are going to cite your reading put the page number of the information or text you are quoting in
parenthesis following the cited material. No need for footnotes unless you are citing other sources in
addition to the article you are reviewing.
Make sure to support any assertions with evidence.
Start every paragraph with a clear topic sentence, and make sure that every sentence that follows in the
paragraph supports that topic sentence.
Some questions to consider when writing your response:
Who is the intended audience for the article? From what point of view is the article written?
How does this article relate to the other existing research on the particular topic (to answer this question,
you’ll want to do a cursory search on the topic to see what others have written about).
Why do you think the author has written this article? What kind of knowledge are they seeking to uncover?
What does the author argue?
What evidence do they provide to support their argument?
Are there gaps in the evidence or argument? What is missing?
Does the author’s argument flow meaningfully from one point to the next? If not, why are the leaps jarring or
confusing?
What was the author’s style like? Was the article easy or difficult to read? Why?
What kind of information is contained within the footnotes?
What did you learn from the article? How did you learn while reading?
What did the author do well? What could they have done better?
When answering these questions, make sure to provide evidence to support each and every claim. For
example, if you say the article was difficult to follow, you need to explain why and provide concrete
examples from the article to demonstrate the confusing organization of information or obtuse language
