Discuss your concepts of the ideas of "unity" and "community." Keep in mind that unity is not the same as a community, as there is often disunity within a community. Also, think about the idea that unity is not the same as uniformity. Persons can walk together and work together and be distinctively different. I want you to analyze what you see in the films and readings, but I also want you to discuss your experiences.
How does an outsider navigate the often turbulent waters of the community? Consider the film The Spook Who Sat By the Door. Does one assimilate in order to accommodate? Or can one adjust accordingly without assimilation? In other words, can one always maintain his or her identity while remaining part of a community or is a loss of identity sometimes a necessary and painful reality?
