The Stamp Act of 1765 imposed a direct tax on the colonies for all printed materials, including newspapers, legal documents, and playing cards. This caused considerable uproar in the colonies due to them not having representation in Parliament and led to protests, boycotts of British goods, and other acts of resistance. The Declaratory Act was passed shortly after the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766. It stated that Parliament had full power to make laws which were binding in all its colonies without responding to their objections or complaints. This helped fuel further resentment towards Britain’s taxation policy and increased colonial calls for independence from Britain.
